The forthcoming musical adaptation of Kinky Boots, featuring music and lyrics by Cyndi Lauper and a book by Harvey Fierstein, will begin preview performances on March 5, 2013, at Broadway’s Al Hirschfeld Theatre. As previously announced, the new musical is set to star Stark Sands and Billy Porter. Directed and choreographed by Jerry Mitchell, Kinky Boots will open officially on Broadway on April 4, following a pre-Broadway run at Chicago’s Bank of America Theatre from October 2 through November 4.
In addition to Sands and Porter, the cast of Kinky Boots includes Annaleigh Ashford, Celina Carvajal, Ellyn Marie Marsh, Daniel Sherman, Marcus Neville, Paul Canaan, Kevin Smith Kirkwood, Kyle Taylor Parker, Kyle Post, Charlie Sutton, Joey Taranto, Andy Kelso, Tory Ross, Jen Perry, Josh Caggiano, Aaron Bantum, Adinah Alexander, Eric Anderson, Eugene Barry-Hill, Stephen Berger, Caroline Bowman, Sandra DeNise, Eric Leviton, John Jeffrey Martin, Nathan Peck, Robert Pendilla, Lucia Spina, Sebastian Hedges Thomas, Marquise Neal and Clifton Oliver and Ellyn Marie Marsh.
Based on the 2005 film and inspired by a true story, Kinky Boots follows Charlie Price (Sands), who is forced to save his family’s shoe factory in Northern England after the sudden death of his father. Charlie finds inspiration in Lola (Porter), a fabulous entertainer in need of some sturdy stilettos. As the unlikely pair works to turn the factory around, they find they have more in common than they ever dreamed possible.
The Kinky Boots creative team includes scenic designer David Rockwell, costume designer Gregg Barnes, lighting designer Kenneth Posner, sound designer John Shivers and hair designer Josh Marquette.
